Scott says that when it comes to religion, without sin there can be no guilt. Without guilt there is no need for forgiveness or mercy. That is why religions that have abandoned the stern teachings of sin and salvation have been drifting toward irrelevancy and why they have taken upon themselves the task of advocating for social justice. In modern times, it is the only way for them to remain relevant. They seek to dress their moral sentiments in the religious clothes they no longer have use for.
